It’s official: Google confirmed that there has been another update to their core search algorithm this week. They confirmed yesterday via Twitter what SEOs had been picking up on this week:
This week we released a broad core algorithm update, as we do several times per year. Our guidance about such updates remains the same as in March, as we covered here: https://t.co/uPlEdSLHoX

Their tweet from yesterday references another set of tweets they sent out in March about broad core algorithm updates, about how they work and what they affect.
How will the update affect your site?
Whereas Google gives us a good amount of explanation when they make specific, targeted updates (think Penguin, Hummingbird, etc.), they don’t really tell us much when one of these broad core algorithm updates happens. Instead, the guidance they provide is that these updates are built to help undervalued pages perform better, and therefore there’s nothing to fix if some of your visibility for a couple targeted keywords slips – it’s just that some of your competition may have gotten a boost because their content is awesome.
Content is the Answer
Whether this particular update helps your rankings, doesn’t change them, or hurts them a little, Google’s message is just to make sure your website content is awesome:
There’s no “fix” for pages that may perform less well other than to remain focused on building great content. Over time, it may be that your content may rise relative to other pages.
